Cristina Cucu

1955 – present

Cristina CUCU, a visual artist, decorator, specializing in tapestry, prints, clothing design, painting, and multimedia, was born in 1955 in Baia Sprie. She graduated from the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest, Faculty of Decorative Arts, specializing in Tapestry, in 1979, and has been a member of the Union of Visual Artists, Baia Mare branch. Between 1979 and 1992, she worked as a creator of prints at the Maratex factory in Baia Mare, and from 1992 until 2020, she was a faculty member specializing in textiles at the current College of Arts in Baia Mare. She has participated in numerous collective and group exhibitions both in Romania and abroad.

The paintings in acrylic on canvas by Cristina Cucu propose an antagonistic discourse between the non-colors of black and white, occasionally “encouraged” by subtle hints of color in ochres or blues. The dialogue of forms, which continuously reshapes the surface of the painting through the articulation of a module, represents an evolution of the metamorphosis of anthropomorphic representations into geometric shapes, depicted in registers and recomposed in rhythms, sequences, and alternations of emptiness and fullness.
