Born in Budapest in 1883, Deák Nándor passed away in 1947 in Cluj. Between 1900 and 1901, he studied at the University of Fine Arts in Budapest, followed by studies at Simon Hollósy’s painting school in Munich in 1902. Between 1919 and 1923, he led a painting school in Cluj. From 1924 to 1925, he worked in Baia Mare at the Painters’ Colony under the guidance of János Thorma and other masters, expanding his technical and artistic knowledge. He participated in exhibitions organized by the Colony and held a solo exhibition at the Journalists’ Club in Cluj.
Deák Nándor, an artist in full artistic development, gradually moved away from the academic idealism and typical genre representations learned from Master Hollósy in Munich, turning to plein-air painting and embracing post-impressionism as a renewal of his plastic expression. His favorite themes were landscapes, scenes captured in the market, portraits, or nudes, created in oil or pastel.
The painting “Old Town” by Deák Nándor creates an atmosphere of nostalgia and authenticity. Through subtle chromatics and details, the painting transports us into the heart of the city full of history and stories. The well-defined architecture and warm light contribute to an idealized image that captures your attention and invites you to explore every corner of this urban landscape.
