MUND HUGÓ

1892 – 1961

Hugó Mund was born in Cluj County in 1892 and passed away in 1961 in Buenos Aires.
Between 1911 and 1916, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, having artist Ferenczy Károly as his master. The artist was influenced by the coloristic naturalism of his teacher and the decorative images of Béla Iványi-Grünwald. As a student, he worked during the summer at the Painters’ Colony in Baia Mare, where he met his future wife, Gizella Dömötör.
They worked as an artist couple, without mutually influencing each other; Dömötör treated chromatics and light in strong contrast, while Mund paid more attention to the plastic modelingof motifs. The typical Baia Mare motifs appear numerous times in their paintings. The influence of Cézanne and modern French artists can be seen in the art of both artists.
The Old Town is represented in a broader perspective, where the main point of interest becomes the well-known Reformed Church, which appears as a leitmotif in the compositions of Baia Mare painters. The artist uses a rich palette of colors and expressive features to depict the beauty and authenticity of this old center. The artist’s work reminds us of the importance of preserving and appreciating cultural heritage.
